The Ballard coal mine was opened in the early 1900’s by Henry Ballard. The mine was sold to BF Brauer in 1911, Brauer expanded the mine to extract the maximum amount of coal. The mine suffered due to a lack of water and paradoxically the railroad that carried the coal out was often washed out by flash floods. The mine was closed in the 1930s and this company store is the last remaining building of any significance.
